Porn on a Nintendo 3DS for Christmas
Porn on a Nintendo 3DS system is something you do not expect from a company that has a very family friendly image. However, for Tom Mayhew of Virginia, the 3DS he purchased for his 8 year old son came with an unwelcome Christmas gift. A series of pornographic images were in the photo viewer.
According to the local NBC news station, Tom Mayhew visited the local Wal-Mart on December 23rd to purchase a “new” Nintendo 3DS for his son for Christmas. After opening the new toy, Mr. Mayhew recounted:
“He went to play his games, not knowing anything was on it. After a while, [the kids] took pictures of themselves and when the picture was taken it went to a file.”
When the kids went to look at the pictures stored on the Nintendo 3DS Camera application, there were photos that they had not taken already on the SD Card. When looking at the photos Mr. Mayhew realized they were porn.
“It was a shocker because we had family here, and there were a lot of kids here,” Mayhew added. “The kids were the ones that discovered those pictures.”
About a dozen pornographic images in total with a time stamp of December 1st were on the device. Since the photos were time stamped from almost a month before he purchased the Nintendo 3DS, Mr. Mayhew wants to know if the hand held was simply a used system that was returned and simply repackaged and sold as a new product by WalMart without taking steps to wipe the hand held. Doing so would have eliminated the porn on the Nintendo 3DS.
WalMart does not normally sell used video game consoles in their stores or online and when WAVY 10 news reached out to WalMart for comment, there was no immediate response to the station.
Porn on a Nintendo 3DS is sadly not a new story. In 2012 we reported on another family that purchased a refurbished Nintendo 3DS that also included porn already on the storage device. In that incident it was due to the retailer not taking the proper steps to wipe the contents of the console before reselling it as a refurbished product.
Mr. Mayhew must now have “the talk” with his son earlier than he wanted to. The lesson he learned, and that all parents should learn, is that when buying something used or refurbished be sure to check it so you do not find porn on a Nintendo 3DS for Christmas as well.
