Randy Orton beat John Cena to become the WWE World Heavyweight Champion on Sunday night in a memorable fight in Houston, Texas.
Just before the match commenced, Cena said twice before making his way to the ring: “Tonight is history.” The match was a ‘tables, ladders and chairs match’ in which Orton got opened up over his right eye early on in the proceedings.
This happened when Orton got smashed against the ring steps by Cena and ended up somewhere in vicinity of the Spanish announcers table. At that point Cena was acting like he had the title in the bag as he climbed the ladder and clutched the belts .
Orton may have been bleeding but that didn’t stop him. He pulled the ladder away leaving Cena dangling above the ring before smashing him in the back with a chair. That hit sent Cena crashing to the mat.
Orton continued swinging chair shots and Cena responded by drilling Orton into a table in the turnbuckle. Orton then grabbed a pair of handcuffs – yes, handcuffs – and restrained his opponent on the ropes.
As if that wasn’t humiliating enough for Cena, Orton then pounded him with a ladder. Cena couldn’t allow that to continue so he removed the rope from the buckle, climbed the ladder and knocked Orton off it.
Unfortunately for him Cena was still handcuffed to the rope and Orton grabbed it and pulled Cena off the ladder. His head hit a table in the corner and Orton was able to climb the ladder and grab both belts.
Randy Orton was crowned the all new WWE World Heavyweight Champion much to the delight of the crowd and with lots of congratulations in the ring from Vince, McMahon, Triple H and Stephanie McMahon.
