It was a scary moment for Hugh Jackman. The Oscar nominee decided to get a mark on his nose checked out on the insistence of his wife, Deborra-Lee Furness. As it turns out, the mark on Jackman’s nose was a lot more serious than he originally thought. The actor took to Instagram to announce that he has skin cancer .
Posting a “selfie” with his nose wrapped in a bandage, Hugh Jackman warned his Instagram followers that neglecting to wear sunscreen could end in horrible results. For Jackman, he found out that he had a specific type of cancer.
Writing about his troubling news, Jackman captioned his photo with a PSA to fans:
“Deb said to get the mark on my nose checked. Boy, was she right! I had a basil cell carcinoma. Please don’t be foolish like me. Get yourself checked. And USE sunscreen!!!”
It’s said that Basal-cell carcinoma is one of the most common forms of skin cancer. This type of skin cancer is rarely fatal, but it can cause severe disfigurement to the surrounding tissues if left untreated. Hugh Jackman’s skin cancer is considered malignant.
Despite posting a very public photo and message for his fans, Hugh Jackman declined to disclose further information about his skin cancer, but it does appear that the actor got the spot on his nose taken care of.
Hugh Jackman isn’t the first famous face to speak out about an illness. In June, Samuel L. Jackson urged men to talk more seriously about cancer to their families. The actor commented that men often hide their feelings, which could be troublesome.
“We’ll talk about our injuries but we won’t talk about our illnesses, so I think it’s time we do that. I realized most guys don’t talk to other guys about what their medical conditions are – especially cancer conditions. And most guys think the only cancer guys get is prostate cancer, or they look at TV and see it as basically a woman’s problem, but it’s not.”
Well wishes to Hugh Jackman and his wife Deborra-Lee Furness.
