The fourth season of The Walking Dead dead is currently underway. Although the Governor was previously mentioned in passing, he’s yet to appear in any episodes thus far.

So what’s the big deal? Will David Morrissey reprise his role as the villain in an upcoming episode of AMC’s hit series? Judging from one producer’s comments, it could be a while before the character returns to the land of the living dead.

During his recent chat with The Hollywood Reporter , The Walking Dead creator and executive producer Robert Kirkman gave fans a little insight about Morrissey’s involvement with the fourth season. Fans might have a long wait before he pops up again.

Kirkman told the publication:

“We’ve just devoted an entire season to the conflict of the Governor and [new showrunner] Scott Gimple came in and was like, ‘You know what? I’m sick of the Governor.’ He actually said that. It’s not that we don’t like that character; it’s just that we needed to give that character a break. Going right back into that would seem like more retread of season three, and that’s the thing we don’t want to do.”

However, just because the Governor hasn’t appeared in this season of The Walking Dead doesn’t mean he isn’t out there somewhere. Kirkman warned during a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times that it would be unwise to write him off just yet.

“He could attack at any moment,” the executive producer said.

Kirkman also told THR that the Governor was never supposed to die in season three. Since they knew the character was always destined for a much bigger story, they decided to put him on the proverbial back burner in order to generate a little suspense. When he finally returns, he’s going to make a serious impact.

The Walking Dead creator continued:

“The Governor lost the battle he was building up to; he lost this town that he had built up, that he was ruling with an iron fist, that was so much of his identity. This guy was completely driven by ego and the fact that he lost all this and it drove him to a point where he slaughtered his own people — this is not a guy who is just going to be able to come back from that. We’re going to see a very different Governor when he does come back.”

Are you hoping that the Governor will return during season four of The Walking Dead ?
