Amber Portwood: Television Special To Show Teen Mom’s Life In Prison
Amber Portwood is out of prison and headed back to television.
The Teen Mom star was just released after spending 17 months behind bars at the Rockville Correctional Facility in Rockville, Illinois. Portwood had originally been sentenced to five years in prison for violating her probation related to a drug possession case, but was released early due to good behavior, time served, and completing two courses in prison.
Portwood will have some restrictions after her release, however.
“Portwood is indeed on parole for an unspecified period of time,” Douglas S. Garrison, chief communications officer of the Indiana Department of Correction told Us Weekly. “She will be subject to random drug screening.”
Now that she’s out, Amber Portwood isn’t wasting any time getting back on television. One of the stars of MTV’s reality show Teen Moms, Portwood will now be featured in a reality show of her own.
MTV has reportedly filmed Portwood’s release from prison, and has interviewed her ex Gary Shirley and daughter Leah.
Amber Portwood’s family may not be a willing participant in the reality show. Back in 2011, Portwood’s brother Shawn said that MTV is exploiting the stars of Teen Mom rather than helping them.
“MTV plays Teen Mom to help promote abstinence and prevent teens from getting pregnant,” Shawn said. “But at the same time, they play a disgusting show known as Jersey Shore, which promotes unsafe sex and drinking. How is it possible to air two totally different shows and feel like they are making a difference in the world?”
But in a more recent interview, Shawn said his sister Amber has been working hard to grow up during her time in prison, taking parenting classes, going through drug rehab, and even getting her G.E.D.
Amber Portwood may have another legal battle on her hands now that she’s out of prison. Before being incarcerated, she lost custody of her 4-year-old girl, and has vowed to do whatever it takes to get her back.
