Thor: The Dark World is already laying the hammer down at the box office overseas.
Since hitting screens in foreign markets last week, director Alan Taylor’s highly-anticipated sequel generated an extremely healthy $45.2 million. This reportedly helped Disney’s foreign box office total reach a brand new record. Even the specter of Gore Verbinski’s The Lone Ranger can’t derail the studio’s success.
According to The Wrap , Thor: The Dark World opened in 36 markets last week. US fans who can’t wait to see the superhero do his thing are still waiting for the flick’s November 8 release date to roll around.
The website also points out that Thor 2 helped Disney pass the $2 billion mark at the foreign box office. This is the fourth year in a row that the studio has generated this sort of remarkable business. The current total stands at an estimated $2.314 billion, which breaks the record previously set in 2010.
Alan Taylor’s sequel is well on its way to breaking even ahead of its debut in the United States. The Hollywood Reporter suggests that Thor: The Dark World will have roughly $100 million in its cinematic coffer by the time its domestic release date rolls around
Although the flick opened in Germany, France, Australia, and the UK last week, several major territories have yet to receive the $200 million follow-up. In addition to the US, moviegoers in China, Japan, Italy, and Argentina haven’t experienced the character’s mighty cinematic hammer just yet.
Unfamiliar with Thor: The Dark World ? Here’s the official synopsis:
“In the aftermath of Marvel’s ‘Thor’ and ‘Marvel’s The Avengers,’ Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.”
While that synopsis does a pretty good job of setting the stage for the action-packed Thor-related sequences to come, the trailer gives everyone a fantastic look at the action.
