The Killers’ Brandon Flowers Thinks Americans Are ‘Musically Retarded’
It took a while before the Las Vegas rock outfit The Killers made a splash in the United States. Since the band found an audience in the UK first, the group doesn’t exactly have a very positive opinion of Americans and their taste in music.
During a recent conversation with The Sun, singer Brandon Flowers and drummer Ronnie Vanucci discussed why it took so long for The Killers to find their way to radio stations across the country. According to Vanucci, the reason is pretty obvious: Americans aren’t the sharpest tools in the musical shed.
“Breaking in the UK first was great because America is retarded musically. It’s upside down. There’s so much great music that doesn’t get the attention. There’s a lot of bulls*** on U.S. radio,” the drummer recently explained to the publication.
Singer Brandon Flowers seems to agree with this sentiment. Instead of letting his bandmate hang himself with these remarks, the frontman expounded upon Vanucci’s shocking statement.
Flowers said:
“I start to wonder, what do adults listen to? Do they listen to what’s being played on the radio? You should listen to something that’s for you — not about giving your virginity to your boyfriend on Saturday night. It is retarded. Every song is that song. And if 40-year-olds are listening to that rubbish, they’re going to raise kids on it. It’s not even music.”
According to the New York Daily News, The Killers are preparing to unleash their new single “Shot at the Night” early next week. If the guys are hoping to continue their success in the US, then they’re certainly going about it the wrong way.
The Killers are getting ready to release a greatest hits album on November 11. Although many people usually see this as a sign of a band’s demise, Gigwise reports that the band doesn’t plan to go their separate ways anytime soon.
“We’ll have a little break then I’ll make another solo album, but it’s not the end for us,” Flowers said about the band’s musical future.
Vanucci added, “People in their 30s or 40s are still really fruitful and I look to those people for inspiration. There’ll be much more music from The Killers. This first ten years has just been the start for us.”
Fans of the band can pick up Direct Hits when it arrives on November 11.
