‘Orange Is The New Black’ Actress Weighs In On Julianne Hough’s Blackface Debacle
By now, Julianne Hough’s Halloween costume might be the most popular costume this year, due to its controversial nature. Hough went to a party in blackface as Crazy Eyes from the hit Netflix show Orange Is The New Black. Since she hit the streets of Hollywood last weekend, everyone in the media has weighed in on Hough’s decision to go in blackface. For Hough, this was seen as a tribute to the actress Uzo Aduba, who plays the most outrageous character on the show.
Now, another actress from Orange Is The New Black has sounded off on Julianne Hough’s insensitive Halloween costume. Aduba hasn’t said a word in regards to Hough’s costume, but her co-star Laverne Cox was very open about what she thought about the whole debacle while speaking with Entertainment Weekly.
When asked about Julianne Hough’s attention grabbing costume, Cox said:
“I think it’s great she likes our show. It’s really interesting that she doesn’t seem to understand. It’s historically tricky in this country to re-create blackface.”
Cox continued to explain why Julianne Hough’s apparent ignorance is problematic:
“I’m not opposed to someone having their form of expression, but she seemed to be completely unaware of the historical implications going in, and I think that’s problematic. If you want to make a choice like that, I think it’s important to understand the historical context you are walking into.”
In order to get away from the backlash she was receiving, Hough took to her Twitter to apologize for her costume, having said:
“I am a huge fan of the show Orange is the New black, actress Uzo Aduba, and the character she created. It certainly was never my intention to be disrespectful or demeaning to anyone in any way. I realize my costume hurt and offended people and I truly apologize.”
Do you think Julianne Hough’s Halloween costume was out of line and racist?
