Man Rescues Beer From Burning Home [Video]
A Georgia man admitted that he rushed backed into his burning home to rescue some beer.
This incident on Thursday afternoon perhaps gives a new definition to the slogan “this Bud’s for you,” if not the term “beer run.”
Walter Serpit, five other adults, and two children were reportedly watching TV in the Columbus, Ga., residence when smoke began engulfing the room. After everyone made it out of the house safely, Serpit apparently decided to rush back to retrieve a few cans of beer.
In fire scenarios of this nature, people can impulsively risk their lives for their left-behind pets or important family records or heirlooms, but a brew rescue seems to be something new.
Serpit explained what happened in the fire to WTVM, Channel 9:
I told them to get the kids out and everything, and me myself, being an alcoholic, I was trying to get my beer out. I went back into the house like a dummy and the door shut on me because this back draft was about to kill me.
Fortunately he escaped from the house with a few cans of beer without being burned and was otherwise unharmed. Serpit reportedly walks with the assistance of a cane, which perhaps made the beer can rescue even more dangerous.
Firefighters arrived shortly thereafter and put out the blaze. The Red Cross is providing assistance to the family.
According to ABC News, “Firefighters say you should never go back into a building that’s on fire.”
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but the family believes the flames were caused by a new water heater.
Under what circumstances, if any, would you ever go back into a building that was on fire to save property, beer or otherwise?
