Even If Marines ‘Girly’ Hats Look ‘Too French,’ They’ll Still Be The Last Thing You See
President Obama is under fire for Marines’ “Girly” hats, with many saying the planned uniform change might as well be from France — which no one seems to remember we renamed “Freedom” back in like 2004.
The Marines’ girly hats issue stems in part from the fact the new proposed style is unisex — so both male and female Marines are meant to look dashing and polished in the chapeaux. Oh my God, it’s happening already!
The girly Marines hats have been dubbed the “Dan Daly,” after a Medal of Honor recipient in World War I, who hailed from Long Island (holla!)
The Marines “girly” hats are drawing a few sorts of criticism — from their styling, which has been deemed totally effeminate to some, and for their cost.
The New York Post quoted on “senior” Marine as fuming of the new style:
“We don’t even have enough funding to buy bullets, and the DoD is pushing to spend $8 million on covers that look like women’s hats!… The Marines deserve better. It makes them look ridiculous.”
The official cost of the new Marines’ hats is $8,221,958, and the paper obtained a memo about the mixed reaction to the headwear.
An excerpt reads:
“The Marine Corps is being ‘encouraged’ by DoD to standardize on a unisex/universal dress and service cap… [no one] liked the idea of a universal cover for all Marines,” the internal memo noted. “The group members did not like the appearance of the Dan Daly cap on the male Marine.”
“Conservative pundit” Stephen Colbert took the anger one step further, saying of the Marines’ hat-gate:
“Oh my god, I just cannot… tell which one is the new one. Oh yeah, the one on the right. I hate those. It’s so feminine, I’m just ovulating looking at them. Those hats might as well be made of tampons and copies of Eat Pray Love. Those two extra inches of brim are the difference between ‘Marine’ and ‘Maureen.’ ”
Others say that the Marines “girly” hats outrage is both ginned up and inaccurate — and that the tie to President Obama is classic blogosphere manufactured scandal.
Business Insider asked Capt. Maureen Krebs, a spokesperson for the Marine Corps, about the Marines “girly” hats, and Capt. Krebs said that not only was the story blown out of proportion — it’s actually inaccurate and false”
“The President in no way, shape, or form directed the Marine Corps to change our uniform cover… We’re looking for a new cover for our female Marines for the primary reason that the former manufacturer went out of business. The Marine Corps has zero intention of changing the male cover.”
Marines haven’t gotten the message though — a Marines Corps Times article is full of frustrated comments about the misguided Marines “girly” hats claim.
Even if the Marines “girly” hats story were true — which it is not — do you feel like the Marines could wear tutus and still be the most badass military force on Earth?
