Jason Statham To Join Melissa McCarthy In The Spy Comedy ‘Susan Cooper’
Jason Statham, action hero extraordinaire, is ready to tackle the world of comedy.
The Expendables alum is reportedly in talks to star alongside Melissa McCarthy in the upcoming spy flick Susan Cooper. Not surprisingly, it’s believed that Jason Statham will portray the straight man in director Paul Feig’s upcoming comedy.
According to the folks at The Guardian, the movie is a comedic take on the James Bond adventure Casino Royale. Outside of this very vague description, little information about the project is making the rounds online.
Susan Cooper is the third film that brings together Bridesmaids director Paul Feig and Melissa McCarthy. The pair joined forces for the hit cop comedy The Heat earlier this year. Since a sequel to that flick is unlikely, Feig and company are moving on to something else.
Deadline reports that Melissa McCarthy will star as an “unlikely secret agent” in the movie. Jason Statham will portray a fellow spy, one who will probably have to deal with McCarthy’s wacky antics. In other words, the comedy probably won’t stray too far from the formula set forth in The Heat.
Susan Cooper isn’t the only project Jason Statham has in the works at the moment. Not only is he currently hard at work on the next installment of the Expendables franchise, he’s also slated to star in The Conjuring director James Wan’s Fast and Furious 7.
Details about his role in the sequel are few and far between at the moment. Jason Statham told Coming Soon earlier this year that fans of the series really have no idea what’s in store for them next year.
“I’m gonna do what I do. Obviously we’re trying to work out now what angle to come from. Some people say, ‘Wait, are you gonna be the villain? The guy who threatens the world and wants to blow everything up?’ No,” he told the website.
More information about his role bubbled to the surface during a chat with Entertainment Weekly. However, Jason Statham stopped short of revealing too many details since Universal Pictures wants to keep as many details under wraps as possible.
“People think I’m gonna play the bad guy. People think I’m gonna be the villain. People don’t really know what’s comin’, and I think there’s something exciting about that. People are just dying to know what extent and what involvement I’m going to have in the movie,” he said.
Next up for Jason Statham is the action-thriller Homefront. The movie finds the very busy actor squaring off against a group of small-town drug dealers led by the villainous Gator (James Franco). Winona Ryder and Kate Bosworth also star in the thriller. The movie hits theaters on November 27.
