Most people dread initiating a break up, knowing a face-to-face meeting can lead to tears, tantrums, or worse. In today’s online world, people are taking a step out of reality to do the deed by using a break up app or website to say goodbye forever in a variety of ways.
According to The New York Times , initiating a break up can be done creatively and quite nicely with the help of a website called the Breakup Shop . If a person has a particularly angry break up in mind, he or she can send a photo of him or herself with a new lover to the ex. If the person wants to end things on a better note, how about sending the ex some delicious cookies and The Notebook movie?
A break up app isn’t just to kick your ex to the curb for you. It can help you to get over the ex a little easier than ever before. Some apps will help you to block texts and calls from your ex. The break up app may keep track of how many days it has been since no contact has been initiated. One app, Breakup Freedom, even offers inspirational quotes from Oprah and Deepak Chopra to keep the brokenhearted moving forward.
Complex reports Facebook’s new feature, “breakup flow,” helps people to remain friends on Facebook but to limit how much they see of one another. The feature is only available to people in the U.S. and is currently being tested by a select group. A manager on the breakup flow team explained how important the feature could be to someone who needs to stay friends on Facebook but may not necessarily want their ex’s lives on their newsfeeds all the time.
“We spoke to social scientists and experts to try and understand: Are we creating good? One of the most powerful moments was talking to a man going through a divorce after 20 years. He said: ‘I have to co-parent our children with her for the rest of our lives. I’ve invested more in this relationship than anything else in my life.’ We want to be thoughtful about the fact that you might want to stay connected but don’t want to be reminded. The breakup flow lets people stay in touch gently and casually, and it’s on your terms.”
If you don’t want to remain friends with your ex on Facebook, there are apps designed to remove all existence of him or her from your Facebook. Posts, photos, and life events can all be wiped away without a trace or placed in hidden folders for you to see in private.
If wiping the ex from your social networking sites isn’t quite doing it for you and you’re tired of seeing all the stuff the ex left behind in your home, you can sell his or her things online. Apps like Exboyfriend Jewelry and Out of Your Life can help you to get rid of the things your ex gave to you or the things you were going to give to your ex.
Of course, if a break up app seems like too much effort to get rid of the person in your life, you can always say goodbye via a text or go the ghosting route. Breaking up in person, through a letter, or on the phone are still options, although it seems more and more people are turning to less personal ways to say goodbye.
