Google has responded to opposition from sporting groups and others over its proposal to the FCC that white space can be used to deliver broadband, with a white paper (above) that argues geolocation can overcome interference in the TV white spaces.
To quote Google: “we explain how our proposals can provide the protections afforded to incumbent users by geolocation, without significantly limiting the promise of mesh networks. We also describe how this technology can support use by the public service community in times of natural disasters and in other emergency situations.”
The constant reiteration of the public service provided by the proposal is a strong angle for Google to play, particularly given that the main opposition comes from big sport which isn’t exactly low on money to adapt to any changes anyway.
