John Elway to have a role with the Denver Broncos

It looks like by the end of the 2010 regular season John Elway will have some role within the Denver Broncos organization. We don’t know what that role will be, but it seems certain it will be a key one, and it looks like he will play a key role as the organization looks to hire a new head coach. Many are criticizing this move as Matt Millen kind of move, I don’t happen to see it that way as Elway was a far better player than Millen and has some experience running a football operation.

Elway was the co-owner of the Colorado Crush Arena football team, and served on that league’s executive committee. That automatically gives him a better resume that Millen had when he came to the Detroit Lions. That is by no means a guarantee of success just that he at the very least has some experience on the business side of football. We should also mention that he has no plans to be the General Manger of the Head Coach.

In a way I guess I am lucky as a native Detroiter I have seen two sports athlete heroes from my childhood move on the business side of things and do a decent job. Joe Dumars built a championship team directing the front office of the Detroit Pistons and Steve Yzerman learned the job of Hockey GM in the front office of the Detroit Red Wings. With that being said most former players fail miserably when stepping into the front office.

In my mind this is a PR move. In Colorado Elway is god, and after the embarrassment of Josh McDaniels, having Elway involved gives the next move a lot of legitimacy and that is what the Broncos need right now.
