Shane Black Opens Up About ‘Doc Savage’ Movie

Iron Man 3 director Shane Black recently opened up about his adaptation of the Doc Savage novels.

The talented filmmaker has been charged with writing and directing the big screen version of the popular pulp stories from the 30s and 40s. According to Moviehole, Black intends to retain several of the original elements for the upcoming adaptation.

Shane Black is reportedly a pretty big fan of the Doc Savage stories, which means he’s likely to do the character justice. As long as the studio allows him to craft the movie he wants to make, fans should be happy with the end result.

“Doc Savage is a personal film to me. It’s a 1930s pulp character so it hasn’t been around for 75 years or so, but people if they’re introduced to it they’ll get to know, hopefully, what I came to love as a kid. I’ve read those series for 43 years and always wanted to figure out how to crack it,” Black told the folks at Collider.

Although he originally described the Doc Savage as being Jimmy Stewart-esque, he later elaborated on his comments with the website.

“The line I so blithely tossed off, ‘what if Jimmy Stewart were a stone cold killer,’ is a bit misleading. Doc Savage had the abilities of a fighting machine but truly the soul of a pacifist,” Black explained to Collider.

He added, “He always tempered his violent skills with kindness and a social conscience, preferring never to take human life. So, um, perhaps my quote should have more accurately read, ‘potential’ killer.”

Doc Savage is currently on the schedule as Shane Black’s next movie. The film will be handled by the folks at Sony Pictures. Unfortunately for fans, it’s currently unknown when the flick will arrive in theaters. While you’re waiting, you can pick up Iron Man 3 on home video this September.
