Together at last: Street Fighter/Tekken games announced
Street Fighter and Tekken remain the most famous fighting games in videogame history (sorry, Mortal Kombat), their names recognisable to even non-gamers. Years ago, a title featuring both franchises may have been unthinkable, but over the weekend at the San Diego Comic-Con, a bomb was dropped with the announcement of two new games: Street Fighter X Tekken and Tekken X Capcom.
Yes, it’s happening. Finally, gaming’s most famous fighters are getting in the ring for a crossover title. Street Fight X Tekken will be developed by Street Fighter creator Capcom, while the company behind Tekken, Namci Bandai, will take care of Tekken X Capcom. Each will be released on Xbox 360 and PS3.
Both game-makers seem to be approaching this as a competition, with Tekken creator Katsuhiro Harada telling CVG:
“The Street Fighter and Tekken development teams have a great relationship. However, I see this new project not as a collaboration, but as the competition of the century between two legendary fighting game franchises.”
Blimey. And Capcom’s feeling similarly feisty. Here’s the company’s Yoshinori Ono:
“This is history we’re making. Two fighting games that have rivalled each other are finally standing on the same stage. This isn’t just a showdown between Tekken and Street Fighter, but a decisive battle for Capcom and Namco Bandai Games. So I’m going to give it my all.”
And when can we expect these almighty titans to do battle? Err, not for another two years, according to this. Christonabike guys, get a damn move on. A few early Street Fighter X Tekken screens below, peeps:
