Two Monks were arrested in Jerusalem today after joining their worshippers in a full on punch up, brawl which lasted more than 10 minutes before finally being busted up by the Israeli riot police.
The fight broke out between Armenian and Greek Orthodox monks in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, ironically revered as the site of Jesus’ crucifixion, burial and resurrection.
Police arrested a monk from each side. Israeli police reckon the monks from 6 christian religious sects who control the Holy site fight regularly, getting into dustups which see them having to respond with riot gear and machine guns.
Other bizarre fights over The Holy Church include a ladder which was placed on a ledge over the entrance sometime in the 19th century which has remained there ever since because of a dispute over who has the authority to take it down.
The six sects also cannot agree where a fire exit should be installed. The Israeli government wants to build the fire exit in the church due to the safety concerns as it regularly fills with thousands of pilgrims and has only one main door.
Another argument between Ethiopian and Coptic Christians is delaying critical renovations to a rooftop monastery that engineers say could collapse.
Its enough to make baby Jesus cry.
