The press junket for Man of Steel is full steam ahead as the movie sets to open worldwide next week. Director Zack Snyder, Henry Cavill (Superman), Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Michael Shannon (General Zod) and Russell Crowe (Jor-El), answered questions at the press conference that took place yesterday.
Henry Cavill was asked if he took anything from the actors that have played the part before:
“I did not take anything from the other actors who have played it before. As an actor, the way I do it and the way I viewed it, with all the actors that have come before, is that it’s their interpretation of the source material, with the source material being the comic books. I wanted to have my interpretation, not out of a sense of ego, but a sense of the fact that it might be a disjointed performance, if I have someone else’s personality and their influence affecting the interpretation of the character. So, I just went straight to comic books. Yes, I have watched the older movies, but I did not apply those performances to mine.”
Amy Adams said she has always been a fan of the superhero, “I grew up watching Superman and loving the characters. I auditioned [for the role] several times. This was my third try, so thank you to Zack [Snyder] for letting me play Lois.”
She added about having a more involved Lois, “When I talked to Zack about this incarnation of Lois, what I loved was that she was definitely still the intrepid reporter, but she was somebody who was going to be a part of the solution, not just part of the problem. She has more of an inner track on Clark. She’s on the inside, as opposed to being on the outside, and I really like that. I thought it was a very unique idea.”
Michael Shannon talked about what a good baddie he plays, “Satan. I get my bucket, and I go down to the well and say, ‘Satan, are you down there? I’ve got to be evil today.’ And I lower the bucket down the well, the lava comes back up, and I drink it. It hurts, but then I take some Alka-Seltzer and some Pepto Bismol. No. I don’t know. I really don’t know. It couldn’t be anything further from who I actually am.”
Amy also told how her daughter really liked that suit and tried to touch it, “I don’t know. She really liked Henry in the suit, I have to say. She did try to give him a little cheeky grab, which was very funny. She wanted to touch the suit, and she just happened to be at rear-end height. She’s going to kill me when she’s older! She reached out and gave it a little touch. But, she’s really into Miss Piggy right now.”
Henry added, “She did!”
Russell Crowe said he’s never seen any other Superman films, “I have a confession. I might as well just get it out, right now. I’ve never seen any other Superman movie. I haven’t seen any of [them]. I haven’t any references, in terms of cinematic experience.”
