Mel Gibson is reportedly in the running to direct The Expendables 3 .
Sylvester Stallone recently stated on Twitter that Mel Gibson could possibly step behind the camera for the upcoming sequel. Although the exchange started out as a joke, the action hero apparently wanted to see what fans thought of the idea.
“What about Mel Gibson directing ‘The Expendables 5?’” Stallone joked. However, this tweet was soon followed up with a more serious inquiry.
“No , I was kidding about [that] but seriously, what about Mel Gibson directing ‘The Expendables 3?’ Opinions anyone? Curious,” he wrote.
If Mel Gibson ends up taking the reins of the upcoming The Expendables sequel, then it would be his first directing gig since the 2006 drama Apocalypto . Gibson was most recently seen in the Jodie Foster flick The Beaver and the action-thriller Get the Gringo .
The actor will attempt a comeback of sorts later this year. He will portray the villain in director Robert Rodriguez’s upcoming action flick Machete Kills . The movie is currently slated to bow in theaters on September 13.
There are numerous rumors currently making the rounds about Expendables 3 . However, very few of these reports have been confirmed by Stallone. Although the actor has stated that he’s interested in getting Jackie Chan on-board for the sequel, it’s currently unclear if the Chinese Zodiac star is ready to commit.
Stallone is also reportedly interested in getting Wesley Snipes to join the cast of the next Expendables film. Since the Passenger 57 star was recently released from prison, Sylvester is reportedly interested in helping the guy get back in the game.
“Sly wants to help Wesley get back on his feet. He sees him as a super addition to ‘The Expendables’ in what will be their biggest adventure yet,” an insider told the New York Daily News .
Rumor has it that the film will begin production at some point this year. If Stallone is interested in getting all of these people to join his movie, then he needs to get things hammered out as soon as possible.
