Regina King will be co-starring in ABC’s multi-camera comedy pilot Divorce: A Love Story .
The series is written by Mike Sikowitz ( Rules of Engagement ) and Daniel Lappin. Pam Fryman ( How I Met Your Mother ) will be directing.
The comedy is based on an Israeli format and follows Kenny (Jason Jones) and Robin (Andrea Anders), a recently divorced couple that can’t seem to stay out of each other’s lives . King will play Cassandra, a dental hygienist and the “diva-minded” volatile wife of Ike (Adam Goldberg), Kenny’s best friend and co-worker. The series will be in second position for King, who is currently starring in TNT’s Southland. The crime drama started its fifth season on February 13, 2013, with the season finale set to air April 17.
While Southland has received positive reviews from critics, it hasn’t been a huge ratings hit for TNT — the most recent episode pulled in 1.45 million viewers — and is currently on the bubble for cancellation. Add to that the fact that King and co-stars Ben McKenzie and Shawn Hatosy have booked second position broadcast pilots, and the season may be the last for the drama. But if the series is picked up for a sixth season, King will continue to play Det. Lydia Adams. McKenzie and Hatosy, however, may not return.
King told TV Line last month, “Of course we want it to come back. But there are just certain things that [make us think], ‘Are we?’ No one’s told us that we weren’t, but there are enough things that haven’t happened – like promotional support — to question, ‘Are we?’”
The newly-single 42-year-old added that things could go either way, and the season five finale may end up playing out like a series finale.
It was recently reported that Regina King broke up with her boyfriend of two years, Malcolm-Jamal Warner . The two have been friends since the 1980s, but Warner — who played Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show — allegedly admitted that he “wasn’t feeling” the relationship anymore. King took to her Twitter account last Friday to assure fans that things were OK between her and Warner.
