Sonic Boom Confused For Earthquake In San Diego
An extremely loud sonic boom that was heard over the broader San Diego area this afternoon was mistaken for an earthquake or major explosion.
Locals turned to Twitter and 911 for details of a San Diego earthquake, but the source of the boom is believed to be man made. The boom was reported to be so loud that some buildings were evacuated as a precaution.
According to local reports, the boom is believed to have come from military aircraft, with the sound amplified by atmospheric conditions.
A military aircraft training area is located off the coast of San Diego.
