2016 Christmas Day Hours: What Restaurants And Stores Are Open On December 25?

Christmas Day 2016 has arrived, and those looking to find what stores or restaurants are open may have their work cut out for them.

The annual celebration of family, food, and presents is also one of the quietest days of the year for retail locations and other destinations, with nearly all of them closed down so employees can spend time with their families. Trips to the bank or post office are impossible, but those looking to find some restaurants or stores open on Christmas Day 2016 will find a few options — if they know where to look.

Below is a list of what’s open and what’s closed on Christmas Day 2016.

What’s closed on Christmas Day 2016?

As a federal holiday, all government offices will be closed on December 25. That means no trip to the United States Post Office and definitely no waiting in lines at the Department of Motor Vehicles — not that you wanted to, anyway.

Banks will also be closed on Christmas Day, though customers will be able to perform some basic functions like deposits or even fund transfers if their bank has a smart ATM. Other financial institutions, including the stock market, will be closed on Christmas Day as well.

And most stores will be closed on Christmas Day 2016. That means Walmart, Target, Kmart, and grocery stores like Whole Foods, Costco, and Wegmans won’t be open again until December 26.

But there will be a few options for those looking to eat a Christmas Day meal at a restaurant or pick up a few last-minute supplies for those Christmas parties. Below you can find which places will actually be open on December 25.

What’s open on Christmas Day 2016?

There actually will be a few stores open on Christmas Day. According to TIME, 7-Eleven locations will be open on Christmas Day along with many CVS locations, which will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Other stores open include Albertsons, Sheetz, and Walgreen’s, which will all be open limited hours.

The TIME report also has information on what restaurants will be open on Christmas Day, catering to the crowd that isn’t into cooking on Christmas Day. You’ll find everything from breakfast (Waffle House) to dinner (Papa John’s) to a coffee run available at pretty much any point in the day (Starbucks).

  • Buca di Beppo: Open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Chart House: Open from 11 a.m to 9 p.m.
  • IHOP: 24-hour locations are open normal hours
  • Papa John’s: Open from noon to 11 p.m.
  • Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse: Open from noon to 8 p.m.
  • Shakey’s Pizza: Open from noon to 9 p.m.
  • Starbucks: Open from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Waffle House: 24-hour locations are open normal hours

There may be other smaller or locally-owned restaurants open on Christmas Day 2016, so if you’re looking to have breakfast at the local diner or getting a steak at your favorite steakhouse, it’s best to call ahead as early as possible to find their hours. Some local drug stores could be open limited hours as well.

And there’s always the option of getting Chinese food — a Christmas Day tradition for many families. Chinese take-out places are generally open on December 25 (but again, it’s best to call ahead to check first).

And those looking for some other entertainment on Christmas Day 2016 will have at least one option — going out to the movies. Movie theaters are always open, and generally get busy for the evening showings when families start to get restless and look for a chance to get out of the house.
