House of Cards Season 5 new showrunners Melissa James Gibson and Frank Pugliese joined the writing team in Season 3. In October, it was announced that Oscar nominee Patricia Clarkson and Campbell Scott will be joining the cast in major roles. Joel Kinnaman will reprise his role as Will Conway and continue his political rivalry with Frank Underwood. Meanwhile, Claire Underwood is having an affair with Yates with Frank’s approval and she got herself a Doug Stamper in Leanne Harvey played by Neve Campbell.
Washington Herald’s Tom Hammerschmidt wrote a hard-hitting piece that exposed Frank Underwood’s corruption and he will have to deal with the repercussions in Season 5. Will Conway did not prove to be a huge threat to Frank, and Joel Kinnaman stated that he has a contract for a “few episodes” during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, which suggests that he is not long for the series.

While it seems like Hammerschmidt has the smoking gun, but Frank used the Islamic Caliphate Organization (ICO) situation to play distraction politics. Underwood declared war with the terrorist group hoping that his leadership in the crisis with secure his re-election and bury the Washington Herald story. However, in House of Cards Season 5, Claire may be the biggest threat to Frank Underwood as she is likely to secure the vice president position. Some fans predict that she may go to extreme lengths to secure the presidency and get rid of Frank Underwood.
There are not many spoilers on the fifth season. However, Michael Kelly gave some juicy details about what we can expect in an interview with Deadline. It seems like we may lose some major characters in the next season as Kelly, who plays Doug Stamper said the following.
“You lose characters that you love. We almost lost Frank, and I always have faith in the writers that no matter what road we go down, we’re going to come back to what the show is.”
House of Cards has always has a storyline that reflects politics in real life. Kevin Spacey has mentioned during an interview that these occurrences are coincidental because the story is written before filming. In his Deadline interview, Michael Kelly also spoke about the current political climate.
“I mean, it’s pretty wild. You know, always keeping in mind that our show is a drama, but yet somehow, even though this is written a year in advance of anyone seeing it, that we somehow manage to coincide with real political events that happen after we make the show. But never more so than this year, with the primaries running at the same time as ours.”
Some fans suspect Season 5 will be radically different with the creator and showrunner Beau Willimon leaving the series. However, the current co-showrunners have been writing for the series since its third season, and we will have to tune in next year to determine if House of Cards still has it’s magic.
