‘Outlander’ Season 3 Spoilers: Brianna And Roger Make Their Season 3 Debut
Warning: This article may contain Outlander Season 3 spoilers.
Outlander fans have been enduring Droughtlander since Season 2 ended several months ago, but, with Season 3 filming well underway in Scotland, more and more spoilers and behind-the-scenes tidbits are popping up to tide viewers over as they wait.
This week, the Daily Mail reported that Sophie Skelton and Richard Rankin were seen shooting Outlander Season 3 on location in Glasgow. Fans of the series, which is based on the wildly popular historical fiction novels by Diana Gabaldon, know that the actors play Brianna, who is Jamie and Claire’s daughter, and Roger, her love interest. Skelton and Rankin were seen filming a street scene and laughing in between takes.
When we last saw Brianna in Outlander Season 2, she discovered that — even though she was raised in America by Claire’s first husband, Frank — Jamie is her real father. She also helped prove to Claire that Jamie didn’t die in the doomed Battle of Culloden as she believed he did.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Skelton and Rankin were cast back in 2015, but executive producer Ronald D. Moore and the rest of the Outlander team kept a tight lid on all leaks about the pair until they made their debut in Season 2.
“There’s been this buildup for so long,” Skelton told the entertainment website back in June.
“It’s a scary thought because of things like the fact that Brianna’s from Boston, but we decided not to go with a Boston accent. We just assumed that given how she was raised in a private Catholic school in the 60s, she sort of had any Boston drummed out of her and she’d be a standard American.”
Rankin also expressed excitement and nervousness about landing a role so many Outlander readers were so invested in.
“There is so much anticipation for these characters. I really think what we care most about is whether people are going to be happy with these characters that they’ve been waiting two years for.”
Back in January of this year, Access Hollywood asked Moore about his quest to find Roger.
“It was a big search, a lot of tape, a lot of auditions, a lot of really good actors. But they’re all, each role is unique and specific so you’re always looking for a specific kind of thing and a lot of times it’s in the category of you don’t know until you see it, so it just took a while until Richard was clearly the choice.”
Moore also compared the search for Brianna and Roger to the search to cast Claire and Jamie, roles that eventually went to Outlander series leads Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan.
“Well, Claire and Jamie was a unique challenge because it really was everything and the foundation of the show,” explained Moore.
“This is a similar challenge in that it’s two people who are very, very important as the series goes forward, and, ironically, it’s taken us longer to find Brianna, just like it took us longer to find Claire. But it’s always made somewhat easier once you cast one of the pair, then you have someone that you’re trying to match them against.”
Moore said more about the critical casting of the couple when he spoke with TVLine.
“It was a big decision, because these characters become big players and definitely permanent parts of the family as the series goes forward, so it was more complex than just casting a guest star role.”
Moore said the on screen chemistry between the actors made all the difference.
“They both just nailed it. We did a chemistry test where we had Roger and Bree on camera together. Once that worked, we felt like we had all the pieces.”
