Season 13 of Grey’s Anatomy is officially underway and Alex (Justin Chambers) has an uphill battle ahead.
From relationship problems with Jo (Camilla Luddington) to beating an intern within an inch of his life, Alex has definitely seen better days at Grey Sloan Memorial.
Despite these early struggles, will fans finally see Alex and Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) get together?
Us Weekly reports that the Season 13 premiere picked up right where last season left off.
Fans watched as DeLuca was rushed to the hospital, barely hanging on to life after the beating he got from Alex. While some of the doctors noticed Alex’s bloody hand, he didn’t tell anyone what happened.
Meredith and Webber (James Pickens Jr.) then headed to Jo’s place and it didn’t take long before Meredith pieced together what happened.
Meredith thought about turning Alex in to the police, but ended up giving him an alibi instead.
“You slipped in the rain. That’s how you hurt your hand,” Meredith told Alex.
That’s when things really started to fall apart.

Jo finally came clean to Alex about her marital status, which ended in another big fight.
Meanwhile, Meredith finally learned that DeLuca wasn’t hitting on Jo that night. The intern was only helping a friend get home safely after a night of drinking.
When she broke the news to Alex, he tried to apologize to DeLuca, who only panicked at the sight of his attacker.
Eventually, Alex turned himself in to the authorities and was whisked off to jail.
Luckily, Meredith was on hand to bail him out.
According to Morning News USA , these events will mark a significant change in Meredith’s relationship with Alex this season on Grey’s Anatomy .
Meredith has already shown that she is willing to protect Alex from harm, and fans can expect that to continue as the season progresses and Alex faces the consequences of his actions.
But does Meredith’s closeness with Alex mean they will get romantically involved?
Christian Today is reporting that showrunner Shonda Rhimes knew that fans would start to ship Meredith and Alex the moment she watched the premiere.
“I watched that scene and I thought, ‘Oh people are going to start shipping Meredith and Alex, because there’s such a sense of comfort and nostalgia. They’re easy and wonderful together.’ I’ve learned to never say never at this point,” Rhimes said.
For now, it looks like Alex and Meredith might actually spark something romantic this season. After all, they have been good friends for over 13 years, so why not take things to the next level?

Of course, Meredith was falling for Riggs (Martin Henderson) at the end of last season.
Will Riggs get in the way of Meredith and Alex?
Fortunately for Alex, it doesn’t look like anything is going to happen between Meredith and Riggs in the future.
In the premiere, Maggie (Kelly McCreary) struggled with her feelings for Riggs and her past history with DeLuca.
To complicate matters further, Meredith hasn’t told Maggie about hooking up with Riggs last season.
In order to save Maggie from the heartache, it looks like Meredith is going to end things with Riggs, at least for now.
Indeed, Riggs showed up at Meredith’s to talk about their romance, but was quickly shut down by Meredith.
If Meredith is ending things with Riggs, then that certainly opens the door for her and Alex to get together.
That being said, there’s no telling what Rhimes has in store this season, and Alex might be facing some serious consequence for beating up DeLuca.
Fans can watch the drama unfold when new episodes of Grey’s Anatomy air Thursday nights on ABC.
