Recently, executive producer Julie Plec revealed a little more information regarding Damon Salvatore’s darkness.

The season finale was surprising. Many viewers speculated that Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) would succeed, but never imagined what would come next. Not only was Stefan’s (Paul Wesley) brother affected by the mystery monster, but Enzo (Michael Malarkey) also became its victim. Going into Season 8 of The Vampire Diaries, what can fans expect, especially when it comes to Damon? According to TV Line, executive producer Julie Plec explained Damon’s darkness and how it isn’t like the other times.
“This dark turn is different [from previous ones] because of the reason why Damon is dark and how he feels about where he is in his life. This isn’t the Damon who’s in it for the thrill and the wicked perverse pleasure; he’s doing this for a reason.”
It is true that Damon has been dark before. However, TVD writer and producer Brian Young teased to TV Guide that this time, they wanted to make it something that Stefan could forgive. With the mystery creature affecting Damon and Enzo, the vampires are not in complete control. That doesn’t mean they are possessed, though. Ian Somerhalder teased in a Comic-Con interview that viewers would explore the “pull” that this entity has on his character. It sounds like there might be some tug of war going on between the creature and Damon Salvatore when The Vampire Diaries returns.
Other information revealed about the villain in Season 8: it is thousands of years old and has some sort of psychic abilities. Julie Plec hinted that it can get inside its victims’ heads. This is how it knew Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) meant the most to Damon. It was even able to perfectly mimic her voice, which is what lured Damon closer. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Matt Davis added that The Vampire Diaries villain knows everyone’s darkest secrets.

As previously reported by The Inquisitr, the extended promo clip for Season 8 features Stefan and Bonnie (Kat Graham). It is obvious that Stefan wants nothing more than to save Damon. Bonnie agrees to help, but it won’t be easy since she is without her magic. During Comic-Con interviews, Plec said the goal was for them to use as little magic as possible, at least in the beginning of the season. The TVD executive producer explained that eventually, magic becomes the answer to everything. This time, things are not going to be that easy. That doesn’t mean Bonnie won’t get her magic at some point. It does reveal that she will be without her powers while they try to locate Damon and Enzo in The Vampire Diaries.
Some fans suspect that the reason for Damon’s darkness is Elena. Whether viewers are “Delena” shippers or not, he just isn’t the same without her. Perhaps the only way to save Damon is to bring Elena back. However, what does that mean for Bonnie and what about saving Enzo?
Other spoilers for TVD include “Steroline” going strong in Season 8. There were some concerns about Stefan and Caroline (Candice King), but it sounds like they will make it. Also, fans shouldn’t feel too bad for Alaric. His character might be getting a love interest of his own.
