‘The Walking Dead’: Spencer Monroe Given Major Storyline? Will ‘TWD’ Character Betray Rick And Make A Deal With Negan? [Spoilers]
The Walking Dead Season 7 will return this fall on AMC. Despite fans being upset about the season finale cliffhanger, viewers are still excited for the zombie apocalypse TV show to return. There is an indication that Spencer Monroe may have more screen time in the upcoming season. What can TWD fans expect from the character?
There may be spoilers for The Walking Dead Season 7 ahead. If you do not want to know what could happen, then stop reading.
Spencer Monroe, played by Austin Nichols, is one of the Alexandrians on The Walking Dead. His name may not be familiar to some because he didn’t receive a lot of screen time last season. However, that is about to change.
On AMC’s official website, TWD character bios are listed. Familiar names top the list, such as Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus), and Michonne (Danai Gurira), as well as other characters that fans know and love. At the bottom, there is a surprising addition: Spencer Monroe, the son of Deanna and Reg. This seems to imply that he will receive a major storyline and/or will be considered one of the main characters in The Walking Dead Season 7.
“Spencer has not had to fight much in his life, before or after the apocalypse,” Austin Nichol’s character bio on AMC states. “Although he can be a bit duplicitous, Spencer believes in Rick and wants to be a part of the fight to make Alexandria thrive.”
Last season on TWD, Spencer went out into the woods after Deanna Monroe died. Michonne followed him and insisted on knowing what he was doing. It turns out he was there to permanently put his mother down. Similar to what Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs) had to do with Lori Grimes (Sarah Wayne Callies) after she died, Spencer didn’t want Deanna to be a walker. He also knew that she wouldn’t want that kind of life for herself. The difference is that Carl killed Lori before she turned and Spencer had to do it afterward.
Another scene in The Walking Dead that fans might remember is when Spencer told Rick that they should have made a deal with the Saviors.

There is no telling what will happen with Spencer in The Walking Dead. Luckily, fans can look at Robert Kirkman’s comic books to get an idea. Even though the TV series and graphic novels are sometimes different, there really is nothing else to go on. So, what kind of character is Spencer in the comic books, and what might his role be when Season 7 airs on AMC?
In The Walking Dead comic books, Spencer decides to talk to Negan and try to make a deal. If he tries this on the television show, things will not go well for him once Rick finds out.
“Rick Grimes is not someone who works well with others,” Spencer tells Negan in the TWD comic books.
“I’m just warning you. Rick wasn’t originally the leader here. It was my father and he was doing a much better job of it. Rick came along, with his group, and really wrecked things for us here. He’s… well… he’s a maniac. That’s the best way to put it. He may even want to work with you, but I’m telling you this guy can’t be the boss. He’s gotta be in charge otherwise, his ego drives him nuts. Well, I am my father’s son. I think I can be the leader he was. I think that’s what we need… what you need.”
As previously reported by the Inquisitr, Norman Reedus teased that there would be broken alliances and betrayal in The Walking Dead Season 7. Everyone is going to handle Negan’s (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) arrival differently. Some will try to fight, others will accept it, and then there are the characters who will completely give up. If Spencer’s storyline in the television show follows the comics, then it is likely he will be playing two sides with one goal. However, will he get what he wants, or does Spencer not realize what he is doing?
