‘Luxury.RV’ Giveaway? Major RV Facebook Scam Has 147,000 People Talking [Hoax]
A page called “Luxury.RV” on Facebook claims that they are giving away 100 RVs, with the “Luxury.RV” Facebook page claiming that Facebook folks only need to like and share a photo of several RVs and leave a short comment on the Facebook post in order to try their hands at winning a nice RV. However, the “Luxury.RV” page is all a scam, according to Snopes.
Another big clue that the “Luxury.RV” giveaway is a scam is the manner in which they forgot to include the third step, as seen in the below claims from the RV giveaway Facebook post.
“We are Giving Only 100 MAJOR RV on July 30/2016
100 Lucky Winners will be messaged via Facebook on July 30/2016.
Step 1) Like this photo
Step 2)Share this photo
Step 4) [sic] Comment ´DONE`
Good Luck to everyone.”
A simple search of several terms regarding the RV scam on Facebook shows just how popular the “Luxury.RV” scam has become on the social networking site.
Typing “Major RV” into Facebook brings nearly 60,000 people talking about the topic, with 1,000 more talking about the “Major RV giveaway.” Typing “Luxury.RV” into Facebook’s engine brings the news that more than 85,000 people are talking about the topic on Facebook, with 1,000 more writing about the “Luxury RV giveaway.”While folks are dreaming aloud about the things they’d do with a new RV, the “Luxury.RV” giveaway scam could be more than just a silly lure to get more likes for a Facebook page. Instead, the “Luxury.RV” Facebook page could be a lure to garner users willing to share a post that could lead them to nefarious or malicious links or phishing scams.
The “Luxury.RV” Facebook page is similar in name to other luxury RV pages, and therefore the scam page is trying to emulate other legitimate Facebook pages. The scam varies in the verbiage of the amount of RVs supposedly being given away. The method and manner of notifying the winner also changes with the RV scam’s fake claims.
“To celebrate over 50 years of being in business we’re giving away this luxury motor home this month! The winner will be chosen on July 30th at 10:30pm est so be sure to like our page to see if it’s you! Good luck!”
It isn’t the first time that scams such as the one claiming to give away nice RVs has appeared on Facebook and fooled plenty of folks. Other scams have promised free BMW cars and bunches of money for simply liking fake Facebook pages. Facebook users who fall for these scams might not realize that it could be harmful to like a page — because in essence they are giving the page more validation and publicity in the process, spreading the scam.
Meanwhile, the Facebook page claiming to host an RV giveaway has a location of Eving-Dortmund — in Germany — but links to MajorRV.com, which is an unrelated car dealership in Hesperia, California.
As seen in the top photo above, luxury RVs can be pretty relaxing — and offer a huge space to watch TV, sleep or travel in comfort. The RV industry experienced a surge in luxury-end rigs in the past — so perhaps that’s one reason the scammers chose to dangle luxury RVs in their scam.
Some of the comments flowing into Facebook regarding the RV scam can be read below, along with the verbiage of a different and similar RV scam.“Sorry I shared this darn thing. Don’t pass it along, I should have known to check, thanks… I had no idea.”
