Jewel & Ty Murray Post-Divorce: Jewel Admits Co-Parenting After Divorce Is ‘Work’

Jewel and Ty Murray appeared to have an amicable divorce when their split was announced in 2014, but the singer said it was more challenging than people know.

Jewel spoke with People magazine about the “work” it takes to make things doable with Ty after their divorce last year.

“It’s work. I don’t want people to think it’s effortless – it’s work to do this because you obviously don’t get a divorce because things are going well,” Jewel said. “But it’s letting those things live in the past.”

Jewel and Ty Murray announced their split in 2014 and have since worked hard to keep things civil for the sake of their 4-and-a-half-year-old son, Kase.

Jewel is currently on the road for her Picking Up the Pieces tour that lasts through May.

The singer-songwriter says the fact she and Ty need to be there for their child meant “realizing you’re in a relationship forever, so learning to treat one another with respect and dignity and just doing the right thing for Kase.”

Jewel wrote the book, Never Broken, that was released last fall. In the memoir, she cites the experience inspired her to evaluate her life and how they contributed to actions she took to lead by example for her son.

“Going through a divorce really caused me to say, ‘What kind of woman am I? What kind of woman do I want my son to know?'” said Jewel. “I wanted him, as he goes through his life, to have permission to redraw himself as many times as he needs. We have many chapters in our life, and we actually get to rewrite them.”

In September 2015, Time interviewed Jewel upon the release of her book. She opened up about how her album Picking Up the Pieces was inspired by Kase.

“The birth of my son really inspired me to make sure I’m the kind of woman I want my son to know, and looking at the places I’ve been stagnant, looking for things that were lost and reclaiming them. The process of making this record and writing this book really helped facilitate that for me,” she told the magazine.

Jewel is a devoted mom to her young son and is in the midst of a new romance. She shares that she’s been dating Indianapolis Colts quarterback Charlie Whitehurst for “almost a year.”

Jewel and Ty Murry were married for six years and together for 16 years.

When Jewel announced their divorce on her website, she released a heartfelt statement.

“I have learned in these 20 years of living my life honestly in front of you,” the singer wrote. “[I] trust that you will all honor and have reverence for how difficult this journey is, and allow us our process as we not only grieve the loss of our marriage, but also as we recreate ourselves in the ashes.”

Jewel reiterated that neither she nor the rodeo star wanted their anger to tear them apart with a son involved.

“But we did not want anger to burn the ties that bound us. Instead we have chosen the much more difficult task of undoing ourselves stitch by stitch, and releasing each other with love so that we may take on our new form: dear friends and devoted co-parents of our beloved son Kase.”

The singer continued that they had “no desire to damage ourselves and each other in the process.”

Jewel and Ty Murray are obviously a couple who don’t believe in letting their personal feelings interfere with the upbringing of their son.
