Get West Virginia Democratic Primary Results Live Stream: Anti-Coal Bernie Sanders Poised For Coal Country Triumph
The West Virginia Democratic primary election looks like another victory for Bernie Sanders, polls show, but results will stream live on May 10. Polls show Hillary Clinton closing the gap on Sanders, who in February appeared headed for a dominant win there, with one poll showing the Vermont Senator with a 28-point lead at that time.

Since that February poll, however, one poll in March showed Clinton with a lead of 13 points. And the two most recent polls have Sanders back in the lead, but by a narrower margin than earlier. One poll, by R.L. Repass and released last week, showed a narrow, four-point edge for Bernie Sanders.
Why Sanders leads at all in West Virginia, a heavy coal-mining state, is a bit of a puzzle to political observers. Sanders has taken an unequivocal stance against the coal industry, and an article in The Daily Beast online magazine last week called him “one of the most anti-coal candidates in American history.”
Adding to the puzzle, Clinton crushed Barack Obama in the 2008 West Virginia primary by an astounding 41 points. West Virginia also voted for Bill Clinton in both the 1992 and 1996 general elections.
But a single quote from Hillary Clinton, which she says has been taken out of context, appears to have hurt her in West Virginia. A conservative candidate for state judge in West Virginia has repeatedly run an ad featuring Clinton saying, “We are going to put a lot of coal miners out of business.”
However, while that quote may have damaged Clinton in West Virginia, the answer to why she appears headed for a loss there may lie in simple demographics.
While demographic analysis can be complex and technical, the 2016 primaries have consistently adhered to one trend, with very few exceptions. In states with an African-American population under 10 percent, Sanders has usually won. When the African-American population exceeds that number, Clinton has almost always won.

The African-American population in West Virginia is a mere 3.6 percent, in a state that is 93.7 percent white.
There is also a Republican primary in West Virginia, as well as one in Nebraska on May 10. But with Donald Trump the only remaining candidate and the presumptive Republican nominee, the primaries are mere formalities. In fact, Trump has actually advised his supporters not to even bother voting on Tuesday.
