‘Vikings’ Season 4: History Channel Has Yet To Confirm Return Date, Rumors Still Fly

Rumors have been rife of late that History Channel’s Vikings will return to our screens with the second half of Season 4 from as early as May. Yes, it’s May now. But, what is the official word on this rumor?

As of yet, there has been no official press release from the History Channel in regard to when Season 4 of Vikings will return. All we know is that Season 4 will return in 2016 and that Vikings has been renewed for Season 5, which is set to air in 2017.

Already, speculation has started in regard to just when Season 4 of Vikings will return. Den of Geek made the educated guess that Vikings would return with Episode 11 after Game of Thrones has aired on HBO. This makes sense, as no one really wants to go up against HBO’s biggest series. That would mean Vikings would return sometime in July, most likely July 30 if HBO has no planned breaks in Season 6 of Game of Thrones. However, considering Game of Thrones airs on Sunday nights and Vikings traditionally airs on Thursday nights, it means these two shows would not clash regardless of when they aired.

However, some fans have been reporting a return date of May. But, no official press release has been issued from the History Channel, so it seems highly unlikely that the show would return in May. However, History Channel did release a video yesterday to their Facebook page stating Vikings would return on May 24. This has led fans to excitedly believe Season 4 of Vikings would return later this month. However, this video release was made on the History Channel U.K. Facebook page. The page, for all intents and purposes, looks just like the U.S. Facebook page, and it is just the URL that differentiates between the two pages. This means that the announcement was for the Season 3 premiere of Vikings in the U.K. and not the premiere of the second half of Season 4 in the U.S. One fan summed it up just nicely in the comments under the Season 3 teaser video, “Go home History, your (sic) drunk.”

So, when will Season 4 of Vikings return? Some of the teaser videos for the second half of Season 4 have shown the words, “Returns this Fall” or similar taglines, implying that would be the return window for Season 4 of Vikings. However, none of these videos have been the official trailer videos for History Channel. All the videos officially released by History Channel show only the words, “Coming soon,” as you can see in the screen capture from the most recent teaser video for Vikings.

A Fall return date actually makes some sense. It gives fans a good break between the two parts as well as a fair break between Season 4 and Season 5, which is due to premiere in 2017. If Season 5 of Vikings starts in the middle of February like Season 4 did this year, to give roughly the same amount of breaks between each part, the middle of September would be the ideal time if History Channel wants the show to be spread out evenly across the year. September means there will be, roughly, a four and a half month break between each season part.

A fan also asked the official Vikings Facebook page for a definite return date for Season 4 of Vikings. History Channel replied with, “Raid the rest of Season 4 of #Vikings later this year!” No official confirmation on an actual start date here, either.
