Mary Poppins Vs. Voldemort? It Could Happen In Olympics Opening Ceremony
Mary Poppins vs. Voldemort is obviously a fight we’ve all needed to see since … pretty much the beginning of time. Not long from now, it seems our patience will be rewarded at the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Well, that’s if a Sunday Times report (subscription required) is correct. The British broadsheet has revealed that Mary Poppins and Lord Voldemort will clash in an almighty battle scene during Friday’s ceremony, which will officially kick off the Games.
The Times reports how the ceremony, which has been shrouded in secrecy, will feature an array of British literary characters, including Alice from Alice in Wonderland, Captain Hook, James Bond and Oliver Twist. Apparently, they’ll all be scared away when a 40-foot Voldemort, the villain from the Harry Potter books, rises from a bed in the center of the Olympic Stadium. But he’ll meet his demise at the hands of levitating, umbrella-toting nanny Mary Poppins, who was played by Julie Andrews in the 1964 Disney film.
Supposedly, around 30 actors, each dressed as Mary Poppins, will descend from the stadium roof and ‘float’, Poppins-style, to the ground, sending Voldemort packing in the process.
It all sounds wonderfully cheesy and insane, and I’m personally hoping for a big dose of British quirkiness to do my home nation proud. Could this story possibly be correct? The ceremony has been put together by Trainspotting and Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle, so let’s not rule anything out yet.
Forget the actual running and stuff for now, I am hella looking forward to this.
