Leonardo DiCaprio has finally won an Oscar for Best Actor at the 88th Academy Awards on Sunday for his performance in The Revenant, as previously reported in the Inquisitr. It was his first win at the Oscars after being nominated in the awards show six times since 1994.
Given how fans are clamoring for Leonardo to finally bag his first ever (and well-deserved) win at the Academy Awards, the Internet just about broke when the presenter for the award, last year’s Best Actress winner Julianne Moore, announced Leonardo DiCaprio’s name. DiCaprio’s fellow nominees in the Best Actor category were Matt Damon (The Martian), Bryan Cranston (Trumbo), Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs) and Eddie Redmayne (he Danish Girl).
Most showbiz media outlets share the consensus that this year is Leonardo DiCaprio’s time to shine, especially considering the incredible acting chops DiCaprio delivered in The Revenant . Playing fur trapper Hugh Glass, DiCaprio went the extra mile to deliver a truly incredible and gutsy performance, even going to such lengths as getting mauled by a bear, eating bison liver, and sleeping in a horse carcass.
Leonardo received a standing ovation from the Oscars audience the moment his name was announced. During his speech, he thanked The Revenant director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, his “brother” Tom Hardy, the film’s cast and crew, his family, and frequent collaborator, Martin Scorsese. Before ending his acceptance speech, DiCaprio took the time to talk about climate change.
“Climate change is real. It is happening right now. It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species, and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating. We need to support leaders around the world who do not speak for the big polluters or the big corporations, but who speak for all of humanity, for the indigenous people of the world, for the billions and billions of underprivileged people who will be most affected by this, for our children’s children, and for those people out there whose voices have been drowned out by the politics of greed.”
The Internet exploded with tweets from fans and celebs who used social media to celebrate Leonardo DiCaprio’s much-awaited Oscars victory. Celebs who joined the fray include Ellen Degeneres, Kanye West, LL Cool J, and many others.
