Miranda Lambert’s Fur Coat Controversy: PETA Responds, Miranda’s Love Of Killing Animals Revealed
Miranda Lambert is a country girl who adores cute and cuddly critters so much that she cares for over a dozen rescue animals, but her decision to wear a fur coat has some of her fans questioning the singer’s status as animal advocate. PETA has also weighed in on Miranda’s heavy new outerwear, and the animal rights organization is criticizing the avid hunter for caring about one type of animal while sending the message that it’s okay for others to suffer in the name of fashion.
Miranda Lambert isn’t a big fan of the glam look, and she usually rocks the standard casual country girl uniform whenever she’s not performing or attending an event: cowboy boots, jeans, and a comfy T-shirt. However, Miranda recently admitted that she has a taste for the finer things in life, and these finer things include luxurious fur coats.
According to ABC News, many of Miranda Lambert’s fans were not impressed when she shared the above Instagram photo of herself all bundled up in a floor-length fur coat that appears to be the real deal. Blake Shelton’s ex was labeled “cruel” and “disgusting” for daring to wear the luxury item, and some of her followers branded her a hypocrite for passionately loving dogs while being okay with the death of other animals. A few fans even vowed to stop buying Miranda’s music.
“Real cowgirls don’t wear fur!!!” one of Miranda Lambert’s Instagram followers wrote. “I am disgusted and saddened by your ignorance Miranda.”
“I won’t buy her music anymore,” another wrote. “How can you love one animal like dogs and then kill another. It’s called being a hypocrite. I don’t support cruelty.”
However, the “Little Red Wagon” singer didn’t kill any animals herself to procure the fur coat. Miranda Lambert revealed that it’s actually a family heirloom that her grandmother passed on to her as a Christmas gift, so no animals recently died to keep Miranda warm during the winter. Miranda was so happy about the gift that she quoted Iggy Azalea.
“‘I’m so fancy… You already know’ my Nonny gave me two of her fur coats!” Lambert captioned her Instagram photo. “I definitely know where I got my love for DIAMONDS, FUR and WHISKEY! #familytradition #grandmastreasures #besthandmedownever #wandathewanderer #bringitwinter.”
Miranda shared a second photo that showed her grandmother’s name embroidered inside the fur coat.
“Her name embroidered inside is priceless,” Miranda wrote. “A family heirloom I will cherish forever. I’m so thankful for her and all the things I have learned from her. Nonny is strong, beautiful, feisty and most of all, loving. #grandmastreasures #diamondsfurandwhiskey #wandathewanderer”
Even though the fur coat was created many years ago, some of Miranda Lambert’s followers still criticized her for glamorizing fur and expressing her admiration for it. A few fans pointed out that her post might encourage other women to go out and buy newer fur coats, and such purchases will help keep the fur industry alive and well. PETA’s vice president, Lisa Lange, also issued a statement to ETonline in response to Miranda Lambert’s Instagram post.
“We had higher hopes,” Lange said. “Since Miranda rescues dogs, we always thought she could see that whether fur comes from a mink, a fox, or a dog or a cat in China, the source is always a gentle animal who did not want to die.”
It’s certainly no secret that Miranda Lambert is a dog lover – according to People, she revealed that she was caring for a whopping 15 rescue animals back in May. Miranda has a habit of connecting with cute critters and bringing them home, so there’s a good chance that this number is much larger by now. There’s also no telling how many different types of animals are running around at her house – in the past, she’s taken in cats, dogs, pot-bellied pigs, horses, mini horses, and chickens.
Miranda Lambert raises money for dogs in need through the MuttNation Foundation charity that she created in 2009, and Rolling Stone reports that Miranda has also proved that she cares about keeping certain species of animals alive by opening up a no-kill animal shelter called Redemption Ranch. The five-acre shelter is located in Tishomingo, Oklahoma, which is the hometown of Miranda’s ex, Blake Shelton.
While Miranda obviously loves dogs and wants to do everything she can to keep them from being killed, it’s no secret that she doesn’t mind killing other animals. She’s an avid hunter, and she once told Southern Living that her most-prized kill was a 12-point buck that she shot with a bow. She told Field & Stream that she didn’t start bow hunting until she and Blake Shelton got together, and he gifted her with her very fist bow. She also revealed that she thinks squirrel hunting is an “exciting” alternative to deer hunting when she gets tired of the “boring” wait to spot a buck.
Miranda Lambert doesn’t just hunt for fun or venison — according to Shark Online, she also enjoys hunting for shoes. During a 2010 episode of the Sportsman Channel TV series Country Boys Outdoors, Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton were shown hunting and killing a small alligator. Miranda said she was going to have it made into a new purse, and she gleefully celebrated after she took the animal’s life.
Do you think Miranda Lambert is a hypocrite for fighting to save dogs while wearing fur and hunting other animals?
