George Clooney Visits Edinburgh Cafe To Help The Homeless

George Clooney is easily among the top five biggest movie stars on the planet, and has been a long-time humanitarian, as well as an outspoken political activist. The actor decided to take time out of his schedule to fly to Scotland, where he visited a cafe that is dedicated to aiding homeless people. The cafe, which is called Social Bite, uses healthy and fresh local produce to prepare hand-made food. But what sets this eatery apart from others is its aim to be a “Social Business.” Every dime of their profits are handed out to good causes, with one-in-four of the working staff having been formerly homeless. Through their “Suspend Coffee and Food” initiative, Social Bite works towards feeding homeless people in their local community.

George Clooney, 54, was given the chance to visit the establishment through a personal invitation from Josh Littlejohn, who is the enterprises’ founder, and who also created the Scottish Business Awards. When the former E.R. star arrived, he was greeted by an overwhelming audience of 2,000 people who gathered to catch a glimpse of the Hollywood actor. BBC News reports that Littlejohn and the staff were more than thrilled for the star’s appearance.

“The staff are unbelievably excited about George’s visit. He’s one of the most famous people on the planet and we are looking forward to introducing him to the Social Bite concept.”

Upon entering the eatery, Clooney played coy as to what he was deciding on ordering, simply insisting that he would look over their menu and see what catches his attention. The actor ended up choosing and eating an avocado, pesto, and pepper wrap. Along with the meal, he donated £1,000 ($1,523 in American currency) to Social Bite. Evidently, Clooney was not the only high-profile guest Littlejohn was able to secure, as Bill Clinton once attended his Scottish Business Awards.

While the food may have been a delicious reason to visit the neighborhood eatery, it was not the only reason for the meeting. George Clooney, on Thursday, attended Littlejohn’s Scottish British Awards, and was also in Edinburgh to accompany a lucky young lady on a dinner date. The actor, who married his wife Amal Alamuddin on September 27, 2014, at Ca’ Farsetti, went on a dinner date with Heather McGowan, 32, a wedding planner who was the winner in a competition to go to dinner with Clooney. It seems that he was able to kill two birds with one stone this week.

According to the Guardian, Littlejohn revealed that he would be helping Clooney with his charity in Sudan.

“We knew that George is a really committed humanitarian, he has his own charity in Sudan, so we reached out to that charity and invited him over to Scotland. We said we would help fundraise for his charity and invited him to our Social Bite cafe, and to our delight he accepted.”

Clooney has been involved in an organization that brings awareness to human rights violations in Darfur, called Not On Our Watch. This is a humanitarian effort that also has other A-list celebrities involved, including his Ocean’s Eleven co-stars Don Cheadle, Matt Damon, and Brad Pitt. In 2006, Clooney spoke at a Save Darfur rally taking place in Washington, D.C., and spent over a week in Sudan and Chad with his father in the same year, to produce the television special A Journey to Darfur. The special put emphasis on the refugees in Darfur and a call to action to help.
