Cake Boss Insults Transgender Carmen Carrera and Issues Apology
This past Monday Cake Boss aired an episode featuring popular Transgender Carmen Carrera, who received notoriety after appearing on RuPaul’s Drag Race. Carrera received more acclaim when she announced she would undergo a full transition.
In the episode of Cake Boss, Carrera was hired to flirt with some of the bakery’s employees as a bit. However, the bit wasn’t aired to Carmen’s liking and she has accused the producers of lying to her and star Buddy for humiliating her.
Prior to filming Carrera sat down with producers to explain what terms would be offensive and what they could refer to her as. According to Carrera producers agreed to respect her wishes and claimed they wouldn’t refer to her as a man. However, when the episode was aired the big punch line came out as “that’s a man!” which was more along the lines of trashy shows like Maury or Jerry Springer.
As soon as the episode aired Carmen took to her public Facebook to express her devastation over the incident writing:
After receiving outraged tweets and Facebook messages from angry fans, the Cake Boss, Buddy issued an apology to not only Carmen Carrera but the whole LGBT community:
I’ve been trying to connect with Carmen and apologize to her directly, but also think I owe an apology to the entire LGBT community. It was absolutely not my intention to upset or offend her, or anyone within the community, and I was wrong to use the words I did. I am a supporter of gay rights and equality, and while I regret this situation and my choice of words, I am thankful to have received this feedback and the opportunity to learn from this mistake. I hope that Carmen accepts my sincere regrets
The plot seemed like a pretty obvious set up from the get go. Do you think Carmen Carrera should have went on Cake Boss in the first place?
