The Unexpected Affluence And Location Of ‘Fear The Walking Dead’ Season 2
When AMC announced they wanted Fear the Walking Dead to be different from the show it was based on, The Walking Dead, they weren’t kidding. Just when you thought zombies on a plane was a way out idea for the Walking Dead universe, AMC puts the cast of Fear the Walking Dead on a boat in Season 2.
Spoiler Alert: This article contains information about the Season 1 finale of AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead. Please proceed with caution if you have not yet viewed all available episodes.
In the Season 1 finale of AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead, fans saw the core characters reunited and in a brand new location: Victor Strand’s house. Not that you can call it a house considering its size and security system. Oh, and the huge yacht that comes with it. Abigail is the boat’s name, and, according to Fear’s showrunner, Dave Erickson, expect Season 2 to follow the characters while aboard her.
“There will be a whole interesting world on the ocean,” Erickson said during his interview on Talking Dead.
“At what point did you know you were going to end the season with Abigail?” asked Talking Dead host, Chris Hardwick.
“I think we always knew we would end up on the coast. It was important to Robert and I that we played the Pacific. It wasn’t until, though, late in the writer’s room that we decided there was going to be a boat. It opened some interesting options for us. We will come to realize that we were probably not the only people with the bright idea to get on a boat and get away from the walkers on land.”
The characters in The Walking Dead have seen their fair share of bad seeds within communities they have interacted with. However, seeing the characters in Fear the Walking Dead deal with pirates as well zombies in Season 2 will be certainly interesting. The potential is also there for the characters to come across boats inhabited entirely by zombies. While those ships will likely be avoided to start with, as food and water run out, these types of vessels may become more alluring. However, a lack of resources will also give AMC an excuse to send the Fear characters to shore occasionally. Something else interesting will be seeing how drug addict Nick (Frank Dillane) deals with life on the ocean while he is also dealing with heroin withdrawals.
Victor Strand (played by Colman Domingo) and his boat brings a whole new level of wealth to Fear the Walking Dead, adding yet another layer to a show that is becoming increasingly different from the flagship program, The Walking Dead.
As Dave Erickson recently told Yahoo TV, “In terms of the socioeconomic world of The Walking Dead, it’s not often that we see people of affluence. There is something appealing to us about introducing this character who had a lot prior to the fall.”
He expanded on this concept to the Hollywood Reporter.
“We wanted to introduce a wealthier character that you don’t see that often on the original show and see how they interact with our blue-collar family.”
Could Victor Strand think he is superior to the other characters in Fear the Walking Dead? Could his affluence and arrogance perhaps lead him down a slippery slope from smooth talker to Fear the Walking Dead bad guy? Only time will tell. Fans can get a sneak peek into what to expect in Season 2 via the video released by AMC.
Fear the Walking Dead returns to AMC with Season 2 in 2016.
