Scarlett Johansson Battles Hawkeye In New ‘Captain America’ Footage
Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, and Chris Evans were all part of a surprise event at D23 in California over the weekend, where Disney and Marvel announced several new projects, and fans went wild over clips from next year’s Captain America: Civil War.
The clip isn’t available for viewing, but according to Forbes reporter Mark Hughes, the footage gave fans a taste of a new villain — Crossbones — and lots of action.
“The footage begins with the Captain America, Falcon, and Black Widow in position for a battle, surveying a busy city street. Falcon deploys a flying drone that swoops down into traffic and up under a large vehicle. The truck’s occupants are Crossbones and his crew, and a large battle commences between these villains and Cap’s team. While Captain America fights Crossbones, Falcon and Black Widow take down the rest of the criminals. We see lots of damage done to the surrounding street and buildings, and Cap’s shield ends up with a bomb attached to it, so he throws it just before the bomb explodes. Crossbones finally falls, defeated, and removes his mask. He mentions Bucky Barnes — aka the Winter Soldier, whom Cap has been trying to track down — and Captain America seems shocked.”
The footage also showed an apparent fight between Black Widow — played by Scarlett Johansson — and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), who are usually pals. It’s unclear what their beef is with one another, but fans can expect a lot of tension in the new film as the characters take on the unknown.
Johansson has quite a bit on her plate of late, with four projects lined up between now and 2017, including Ghost In The Shell. There’s also rumblings that she’ll take the lead role in a remake of The Creature From The Black Lagoon, but that has not been confirmed. According to 3News, Scarlett would play Kay Lawrence, “a scientist who discovers a pre-historic half-human, half-fish creature in the Amazonian jungle.”
Scarlett was spotted last month on her way to a U2 concert rocking bright red hair — not unlike her Marvel character — but it’s unclear whether her pixie cut will show up in the new Captain America film or if the color is something she chose on her own.
Johansson has said that she loves playing Black Widow because she’s so complex. Not one who wanted to step into the superhero spotlight, Widow has a difficult time forming bonds with others, and Scarlett says she was drawn to that.
“I really enjoy playing this character. She was really the first female superhero, a reluctant one. She’s never really been able to forge close relationships with anybody. She’s a lone wolf,” Scarlett Johansson said.
