Shark Bites Surfer In Florida And A Woman Is Bit In South Carolina: Both Were On Beach In Shallow Waters

A shark bit a surfer in the waters off Daytona Beach over the weekend, and a woman was bit by one on a South Carolina beach.

CBS Local 4 in Miami reports that a 25-year-old man was waist-deep in water when he had the encounter with the shark Sunday evening. According to Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue Capt., Tamra Marris, the shark wasn’t seen in the attack, but caused minor lacerations to the surfer.

Fortunately, the Florida surfer bit by the shark didn’t need to go to the hospital, and was treated at the scene.

That wasn’t the only shark bite that happened Sunday. On Sunday morning, a woman on Edisto Beach in South Carolina was bit by a shark, WLTX reports.

Colleton County officials says that the woman suffered minor injuries when she was bitten by the small shark. Like the surfer who was bit by the shark on Daytona Beach, the 35-year-old woman was in waist-deep water. It was determined to be a 3- to 4-foot-long shark that bit her, according to rescue officials. The woman from Mount Pleasant had a small cut on top of her foot and two puncture wounds on the bottom of it. She was taken to Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro and got some stitches put in.

The last several days have been filled with shark attacks. Last week, a man was killed on Tasmania’s Maria Island while he was scallop fishing. His daughter witnessed most of the horror. When she noticed her father didn’t return from a dive he was on for scallops, she searched for him.

Inspector David Wiss of the Tasmania Police said that the woman in her early 20s “saw a very large shark and she saw her father being attacked by the shark.”

ABC News reports that boaters assisted in the search and found the man’s body. They pulled him by an air hose, but his injuries were fatal.

The Inquisitr has covered a large array of shark attack stories. A lot of shark bites and shark encounters happen along the East Coast, from the Carolinas down to Florida. It’s not just along the southern regions of the Atlantic where this is happening, however. A Rhode Island beach was recently shut down temporarily due to numerous sharks gathering in the area, very close to the shoreline.

Several shark encounters have happened in 2015. Many of the shark bites have ranged from minor to serious — and in rare cases, death. Still, experts, say that shark attacks are extremely rare given the ratio of people on the beach to sharks along the shoreline.
