Upcoming Verizon Video Service To Be Called ‘Go90’
A report by Variety said that the upcoming online video service from Verizon will be called Go90. Though the upcoming service wasn’t a secret, its name was definitely a surprise to some people. TheVerge’s Chris Welch thought the name of the service was fairly outrageous.
“That’s some absolutely horrid, nonsensical branding, but the actual product doesn’t sound nearly so bad.”
While Go90 may have been a bad name choice according to critics, the service itself has successfully intrigued many in the video-streaming industry. It appears as if the upcoming service will at least start out free. It is likely however, that some of the content on the service will only be available through a subscription.
Go90 will offer TV shows, music videos, and other video content to its users. There will reportedly be a Go90 app for iPhone and Android made available when the service launches.
The app will be free and available to anyone. It is said to be ad-supported, and will likely work the same way the popular video streaming service Hulu does. Certain content will require you to be a Verizon Wireless customer.
Some exclusive content will reportedly be available to Go90 users, similar to Netflix Originals. By offering exclusive content to its users, Verizon hopes that it can attract more cellphone customers.
Verizon has recently been working with several partners like Viacom, ESPN, DreamWorks, and others. The companies Verizon has been working with lately will most likely provide some content for Verizon’s new service.
“We didn’t want to mimic TV—that’s just an appliance you rearrange your living room around. Instead, we wanted to create a mobile-first, video-based app that can keep up with you and your on-the-go social life. One that features completely immersive live and on-demand content, no matter where you are or where you’re going. No cord required.”
The information on Go90 was reportedly gathered when a Verizon website accidentally went live. A Verizon spokesperson told Variety that some of the information accidentally released online was inaccurate, but didn’t go any further into detail.
The site that listed that hosted the information regarding Go90 was dev.oncue.com and has since been taken offline.
Go90 is a revival of sorts from the failed OnCue service. OnCue was an online service built by Intel that was meant to replace cable. As noted by The Verge, Intel ended up selling OnCue to Verizon last year for $200 million.
Verizon’s Go90 service will launch by the end of summer, according to reports.
