Audiences viewing Ted 2 , which hit theaters on Friday, will undoubtedly notice that there are quite a few jokes comparing Amanda Seyfried’s eyes to the eyes of Gollum from The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Many actresses might have taken great offense to become the butt of so many jokes, particularly in such a public forum, but not Amanda. On the contrary, Ms. Seyfried seems to have been a wonderful sport about it.
“They get a laugh, I think it’s funny. I don’t think I look like Gollum, but I certainly do have big eyes,” Seyfried says. “People have made fun of them my whole life.”
Apparently, the Gollum jokes didn’t begin with Ted 2 for Amanda. Ms. Seyfried recalls becoming the brunt of those Gollum jokes last year, when she was making A Million Ways to Die in the West with Seth MacFarlane. For one scene, Seth and Amanda traveled to Santa Fe, New Mexico, to shoot those Gollum jokes in a peyote dream sequence. Later, special effects were used to make Seyfried’s eyes appear even larger.
“The thing about comedy is that you have to have 100 percent humility, especially if you are the straight person,” said Amanda.
On the set of Ted 2 , MacFarlane and Mark Wahlberg discovered what a great sense of humor Ms. Seyfried did have about the entire idea of comparing her eyes to Gollum.
“She’s a good sport. And she has gorgeous, big Garfield eyes,” commented Seth.
Unaware of the history behind the jokes, Wahlberg admitted to worrying about Amanda’s reaction to the lines.
“I was like, ‘Oh, my God! Oh, my God! Is she going to cry? What’s going to happen?’ But she was fine.”
“If she cries, we’re all going to drown,” added MacFarlane.
Amanda Seyfried plays Samantha, a pot-smoking lawyer in Ted 2 , and she definitely got her revenge for those eye jokes , when asked what it had been like to kiss co-star Mark Wahlberg.
“Eh.” Maybe that wasn’t an honest reaction, but who could blame Amanda after spending months on a set with jokers and pranksters.
“I was messing around with him. I shouldn’t have been — little pranks here and there. He took it to the next level. Really smart guy, he took my dog, and he hid him.”
“I panicked, because I didn’t think that that was possible,” Ms. Seyfried added. “The truth is I cried so hard, he was like, ‘Ah, you know what? I feel bad for this girl.’”
