‘Under The Dome’ Star: ‘There Was A Ton Of Stuff That Shocked Us’

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Under The Dome.

Mike Vogel, the star of the sci-fi series Under The Dome, hopes that tonight’s premiere, which begins the show’s third season, will pull in new fans and excite current fans with the new direction that Under The Dome will be taking in the coming weeks.

“We pick up this year exactly where we left off last year and really, really, really take it some interesting places,” says the Under The Dome star.

Fans returning to Under The Dome from last season remember being left with the question of whether the story would allow for a third season at all. The people of Chester’s Mill were being led to safety, having found away to escape from under the dome and head out into the free world beyond.

“Follow me, we’re going home,” Melanie (Grace Victoria Cox) told the townspeople, seemingly confirming that season 3 of Under The Dome may possibly be a single episode. After all, what’s left to do?

“That’s right! I’m already looking for another job right now,” says Mr. Vogel, laughing.

“The theme of this year is ‘the enemy within.’ There is something powerful and terrible happening within the people of Chester’s Mill,” explains Under The Dome‘s Vogel. “Right off the bat — starting from first two-hour premiere — there was a ton of stuff that shocked us. We’re getting to go to a lot darker places than we’ve been able to go into in the past. We’ve seen Barbie be the anti-hero and trying to make amends for a lot of his demons in the past and his military days. This year, we tap into the dark side of him.”

There will be “more of Barbie in his element,” explains Mike of his character.

Vogel wouldn’t reveal what will happen, when Melanie leads the townsfolk to freedom on Under The Dome’s premiere, which aired tonight, but he did say that, in addition to bringing a greater sci-fi element to the series, the third season of Under The Dome would test relationships throughout the season. In particular, the romance between Julia (Rachelle Lefevre) and Barbie will be challenged by young anthropologist, Eva Sinclair (Kylie Bunbury).

Neal Baer, the executive producer of Under The Dome, was as tight-lipped as Vogel, but he did make a promise to fans.

“Season three is more like season two, because it’s more chilling and horrifying, scarier, spookier,” the Under The Dome E.P. said. “It’s also the season where we do tell you — and we promise to tell you — why the dome came down and who or what’s behind it.”

Baer also revealed that each season introduces a new theme, an overreaching idea that affects the stories of each season.

“The first year was faith, fear and fascism. The second year was faith vs. science. This year, it’s the individual vs. the group, with the theme being the enemy within.”

Under The Dome airs Thursday nights on CBS.
