Franksville, Wis. – Rick Santorum is becoming a bit unhinged in his campaign to derail the nomination of Mitt Romney. Romney seems on a path to have the nomination locked up by June. Meanwhile, Santorum says Romney is the “Worst Republican” to face Obama in the fall.
Santorum, with his anger growing said,
“Pick any other Republican in the country. He is the worst Republican in the country to put up against Barack Obama,” He clarified his statement saying, “On the issue of health care. That’s what I was talking about, and I was very clear about talking about that. OK? Come on, guys, don’t do this. I mean, you guys are incredible. I was talking about Obamacare, and he is the worst because he was the author of Romneycare.”
When pressed by a reporter from the New York Times Santorum even went as far as to use a curse word at the reporter, saying,
“Quit distorting my words. It’s bulls—.”
Santorum has beaten Romney in many key states in the South and has shown the country that the conservative Republican base will turn out for him much more than Romney. That hasn’t stopped Romney from enjoying a more than 2-1 advantage in delegates and wins in the more volatile swing states.
No Republican has a chance to unseat President Obama without being able to appeal to the center and Rick Santorum does not seem to be accomplishing that. His criticism of Romney is not without merit as the Republicans most potent campaign issue for 2012 is Obamacare, and with Romney instituting basically the same law in Massachusetts it makes it harder to campaign against.
It will be interesting to see if Mitt Romney will be able to overcome that hurdle in November.
