Kevin Bacon Finally Promotes Eggs In Edgy New Campaign [Video]
Kevin Bacon hops on a new egg campaign just in time to boost sales for Easter and beyond.
Get used to puns, as they are plentiful in the American Egg Board’s new print and online campaign featuring Kevin Bacon and, of course, his name.
“Because nobody knows eggs better than Bacon, Kevin Bacon.”
The campaign — “Wake Up to Eggs With Bacon” — is a twist on the original — “Wake Up to Eggs.” According to CBS News, Bacon is the first Hollywood celeb to star in an American Egg Board campaign.
In the edgy online video, Kevin surprises a woman as she cooks eggs in the morning. She casually comments to herself that, “Nothing is better than eggs in the morning, except maybe eggs and a side of…” He startles her by showing up out of nowhere and completing her sentence, “Bacon,” as she turns to find him stretched out invitingly across her kitchen island.
He goes on to throw egg nutritional values at her, and she throws some unwanted puns at him. It ends as her husband walks in catching her sniffing the Bacon.
The egg board is hoping to continue the momentum in sales created by a more positive public image. Sales declined for years due to consumers’ fear of all things cholesterol. However, eggs are making a comeback, thanks to America’s new-found craving for protein. Additionally, a recent government advisory report states high cholesterol foods aren’t the cause of high blood cholesterol levels, letting the humble egg off the hook. The American Egg Board feels it’s finally time for eggs to shine, as noted by senior vice president of marketing, Kevin Burkum.
“We think we’re in the beginning stages of the most positive, long-term growth period for eggs in decades.”
While the egg is becoming more popular, it still has a way to go to reach the level of consumption it boasted in its 1970’s hay day. Americans at that time consumed about 300 eggs per year. The average last year was 259.8 per person — up from 249.3 in 2010. Maybe Kevin Bacon, America’s love affair with protein, and less cholesterol fear will push it closer to its peak popularity.
Aside from the obviously perfect name, Kevin really does like eggs, and is excited to promote them, according to Ad Week.
“With a last name like Bacon, I’m the obvious choice, and I’m excited to be a part of the new Incredible Edible Egg campaign. I like the creativity behind the idea, and I’ve always been a big fan of eggs. They’re a nutritional powerhouse and I never get tired of them because there are so many ways you can eat them.”
The American Egg Board is also excited to have Bacon alongside their eggs.
“Kevin Bacon brings real star power to the world of eggs and we think consumers are going to love this clever new version of bacon and eggs. And there’s no better time to talk about eggs with consumption at its highest level in three decades and Easter right around the corner.”
It’s a perfect match that was bound to happen sooner or later.
