The director caused a stir this weekend when he tweeted negative opinions of snipers, calling them “cowards.”
“My uncle killed by sniper in WW2,” Moore wrote. “We were taught snipers were cowards. Will shoot u in the back. Snipers aren’t heroes. And invaders r worse.”
Sarah Palin was posing with Dakota Meyer, a Medal of Honor recipient who also criticized Michael Moore for his American Sniper comments.
The movie American Sniper is based on a book by real-life Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, who was one of the most prolific snipers in American history, but was killed by a troubled veteran upon his return to the United States.
Moore later expounded on the comments, explaining the history behind it.
“Lots of talk about snipers this weekend (the holiday weekend of a great man, killed by a sniper), so I thought I’d weigh in with what I was raised to believe about snipers,” Moore wrote in a Facebook post. “My dad was in the First Marine Division in the South Pacific in World War II. His brother, my uncle, Lawrence Moore, was an Army paratrooper and was killed by a Japanese sniper 70 years ago next month.”
Moore added that he believes other American share his views.
“My dad always said, ‘Snipers are cowards. They don’t believe in a fair fight. Like someone coming up from behind you and coldcocking you. Just isn’t right. It’s cowardly to shoot a person in the back. Only a coward will shoot someone who can’t shoot back.'”
“I don’t think most Americans think of snipers as heroes,” he added.
The remarks have led to widespread criticism. Singer Kid Rock had harsh words for both Michael Moore and Seth Rogen, who also criticized the movie.
“F*** you Michael Moore, you’re a piece of s*** and your uncle would be ashamed of you. Seth Rogen, your uncle probably molested you. I hope both of you catch a fist to the face soon.
“God bless you Chris Kyle, Thank you for your service.”
Sarah Palin and Michael Moore have clashed in the past, with the director, saying shortly after her vice presidential selection in 2008 that the then-governor was an “extremist.”
