Mom Charged Drain: Mom Charged With Attempted Murder After Leaving Infant In Drain
A mom has been charged after leaving her newborn in a drain in Australia. According to Sky News, the mother, 30, placed her baby in a drain and left it there for days. The baby was found by a group of cyclists who were riding by and heard the baby crying. The strangers worked to lift the concrete drain cover, where they found the infant wrapped in a blanket at the bottom.
According to the Stamford Advocate, the cyclists first thought that the noise they were hearing was a kitten.
“We actually thought it was a kitten at first, but when we went down there we could hear exactly what it was — you could definitely tell it was a baby screaming,” said cyclist David Otte.
The mom charged in the drain drop has not been identified publicly, but police were able to identify her by hospital record checks and house-to-house inquiries in the area. The boy is being cared for at a nearby hospital, and is listed in serious but stable condition. The boy was not physically injured, but was malnourished.
“It would appear the striped blanket is similar to what is wrapped on babies in hospitals. I can also say the umbilical cord had been cut and had been clamped so it appears to have some sort of medical intervention since its birth. It was already undernourished, and dehydration would have taken affect so we would have had grave fears for the child’s welfare had it been exposed to this weather for the rest of the day,” said Inspector David Lagats.
The mom charged for dumping her baby in a drain wasn’t the first mom to ever do such a thing. As previously reported by the Inquisitr, there was a similar story back in 2013. A 26-year-old woman allegedly dropped her child in a drain, and abandoned him. Police caught the child’s mother, and she was jailed for suspicion of attempted murder.
“The tiny 4-pound boy is only a few days old and was taken to the city’s general hospital for treatment of injuries including a broken arm.”
As for the woman in Australia, police released the following statement.
“A woman has been charged with attempted murder after a newborn baby was found in a drain in Sydney’s west on Sunday. Police will allege the baby, believed to have been born on Monday, was placed into the drain on Tuesday 18 November.”
