Michael Strahan and Nicole Murphy Split After Five-Year Engagement.

Michael Strahan and Nicole Murphy have mutually decided to end their five-year engagement.

When asked about the reason behind the seemingly abrupt end of this lengthy relationship, an official representative of Michael Strahan stated:

They love each other very much, but with the distance and work schedule it has been hard to maintain the relationship.

That does not seem like the same story that Michael Strahan was telling about Nicole Murphy when he was interviewed by People shortly after their engagement was first announced back in May of 2009. Shortly after proposing on a Bahamian beach to Murphy with a white and canary yellow diamond ring, Strahan had this to say about his relationship:

I have a great relationship and she’s a great girl. I don’t like to talk much about my private life, but I’m really happy.

It seemed that Nicole Murphy was just as swept away in love at the beginning of the relationship as Michael Strahan. After they had been dating for about a year, Murphy told People that Strahan changed her mind about falling in love and getting involved with another man after her long marriage and bitter divorce to Eddie Murphy.

When I got divorced, I said never again…[But] Michael and I talk about everything, and we both love to travel, explore and laugh.

A couple that used to travel together seems to have been traveling more and more apart. That is really the only way that distance could play such a significant role in the abrupt ending of such a lengthy and seemingly successful relationship.

Perhaps marriage is simply not for these two celebrities that seem to be spending more and more of their time in the public eye. When they first got engaged, Michael Strahan was a newly retired professional football player that was part of a newly picked up yet short-lived television series on FOX, Brothers. Nicole Murphy was still trying to find a spotlight of fame for herself after filing for divorce from her husband of 12 years, Eddie Murphy.

What a big difference five years can make when you are in the limelight, right? Michael Strahan is now a successful morning talk show host on Live with Kelly & Michael, one of the cast members of Good Morning America, and a new inductee of the Hall of Fame Class of 2014. Nicole Murphy is one of the stars of the VH1 reality television series, Hollywood Exes.

Perhaps Michael Strahan dreadfully regrets the interview that he had with Ebony Magazine recently, in which he stated that Nicole Murphy was the perfect woman for him simply because she was so family-centric. Between the two of them, Strahan and Murphy had nine kids from previous relationships so it is not surprising that having a family woman was so important for him:

As a divorced man, you just want somebody around your kids who’s respectful and will treat them like her own. When you understand that, there’s never any issue…I love the kids and the family. For us, it’s key that we maintain normalcy. We have a great life. People can buy into their own celebrity, and that’s a dangerous thing.

Clearly, their life together was not as “great” as Michael Strahan originally thought, or at least claimed.
