Flight Attendant Warns Travelers To Flush Their Drugs Before Landing, Mad Rush For The Toilets Ensues

Man travelers on a Sydney-bound Jetstar Australia flight on Sunday night were headed home after Splendour in the Grass weekend music festival at Byron Bay. The airlines apologized Wednesday night for the warning a flight attendant gave regarding the disposal of illegal drugs.

According to the Huffington Post, on Sunday night prior to landing, a flight attendant on the plane made an announcement saying,

“We have been told there are sniffer dogs and quarantine officers waiting in the domestic terminal. If you need to dispose of anything you shouldn’t have, we suggest you flush it now.”

After the announcement, which was made on the public plane speakers, apparently a number of passengers made a dash for the toilets. One passenger on the flight told the Telegraph that once the announcement was made, many passengers got up and went straight for the restrooms clenching things in their hands.

Jetstar spokesman Stephen Moynihan confirmed the newspaper report was accurate, the announcement was made and passengers did proceed to dash for the toilets. However, Jetstar also noted that they have received “mixed” reactions to the announcement. Some people are calling the flight attendant a “good Samaritan”. However, others are not so pleased with the public announcement noting they hope that in the future the airlines allows those possessing illegal items to be caught in the terminal.

“Why would you tip people off about this? If they have got something illegal, let them get caught.”

Others were praising the flight attendant stating she probably saved a lot of people a lot of hard time.

“Must love an airline that saves 20 years in maximum security!”

Others posted kind words to Twitter and Facebook noting that the airline probably helped a lot of passengers avoid humiliating searches, fines and potential jail time.

However, Jetstar has officially apologized to those offended by the announcement and said that the announcement was worded poorly and that the issue would be discussed directly with the cabin crew. The airline did note that the announcement is not all that unusual stating, “it [the airline] routinely makes quarantine announcements on such flights that cross state borders.”

What do you think about the flight attendant’s public warning? Should the airlines warn passengers of potential inspection by law enforcement for contraband items such as drugs or just allow the passengers to face the consequences? Is the flight attendant a hero or should she be reprimanded?
