Sofia Vergara has not had the kind of easy life that it is assumed celebrities enjoy. Born in Columbia, she was married at 18, had a child at 19, and was divorced at 20. Her elder brother was murdered, and her younger drug-addicted brother was deported.
In the year 2000, she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, had her thyroid removed, and now has to take medication daily to control her thyroid balance. She was engaged for two years to businessman Nick Loeb, but that relationship fell apart, and they split last month.
In her distress, Sofia turned to her friend, Ellen DeGeneres for support, and Ellen was quite willing to give it. Unfortunately, rather TOO willing as far as Ellen’s wife, Portia De Rossi, was concerned. The tabloid press seems to be constantly documenting the apparently volatile nature of their relationship, and the claims that they are constantly fighting about something. Now, it appears that they are fighting over Sofia Vergara and her closeness to Ellen.
According to a report in OK! Magazine , Ellen, Portia, and Sofia make an uncomfortable threesome. A source explained, “Portia always resented Ellen’s friendship with Sofia, and now that Sofia is leaning on Ellen for support, she’s even more jealous.”
Considering that Sofia Vergara has been married to one man, and engaged to another, it is difficult to understand what is the basis for Portia’s jealousy. Of course, it is not unknown for people to ” change teams,” as it were, but there has never been any indication that Sofia is anything other than straight.
And Ellen’s reassurances that there’s nothing going on have done nothing to mollify Portia’s fears. She feels that Sofia and Ellen are just too “touchy-feely” for her liking, and she wants Sofia to back off. For her part, Ellen has accused Portia of blowing the situation out of proportion and said that she and Sofia are just good friends.
For some time now, Ellen has fended off allegations that the couple are thinking about divorce. A story in People magazine related to pictures of Ellen without her wedding ring. Her explanation was “I didn’t wear it because when I ride horses and I’m holding the reins, it gives me a blister!”
She added, “The truth is, and this is corny, I fall more in love with Portia all the time. I really do. She surprises me all the time. It’s what anyone experiences when you find that person that gets you, wants to take care of you, wants the best for you. We’re really lucky because we know how rare it is.”
However, given the old adage that “there’s no smoke without fire,” it is unlikely that stories about the Sofia Vergara connection will disappear any time soon.
