Fifty Shades Of Rich: Bondage Book Author Earns $55 Million In One Year From Grey Trilogy
It has just been revealed that Fifty Shades of Grey also means “Fifty Shades of Rich,” as new figures show that the author of the steamy trilogy, E.L. James, earned a massive $55 million in just one year from her books.
That translates to about $150,000 per day!
Just to put these figures into perspective, that’s four times more than the total earnings for the Harry Potter books of J.K. Rowling in the very same year.
The Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy, which is based around a sadomasochistic millionaire called Christian Grey, who falls in love with, and seduces a submissive younger woman, has already sold more than 100 million copies worldwide and is being made into a Hollywood film.
The much anticipated film adaptation of the books will star Jamie Dornan and is directed by Sam Taylor-Wood.
More to the point though, how much does E.L James (whose real name is Erika Leonard) stand to earn from it?
Considering that the latest accounts filed by James’ company, aptly named, Fifty Shades Limited, show a pre-tax profit of $55 million in the year to September 2013, she paid herself only a modest salary of around $13,000 a month.
Even though she did take substantial dividends, and rightfully so, James, a former TV exec, was also able to pay an additional $850,000 into her pension.
James and her husband Niall live in a modest six-bedroom house in west London and maintain a normal life despite the wealth they have acquired.
Niall previously revealed to reporters:
“Commentators can conjure ridiculous royalty figures out of the air and imply that our afternoons are spent in an infinity pool with trained dolphins bringing us goblets of chilled Bolly, but in real life the dog has to be walked and the children have to be fed and ferried around.”
No matter what you think of the hugely successful Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy, there is no denying it has something special which caught the public’s interest.
And no doubt you’ll want to see the film when it comes out, to see how all those steamy bits from the books will be played out.
